FIVE

The ability to supercharge

your internal motivation is the most essential element for success. Without that self-fired motivation, ideas or projects, regardless of their brilliance, will not achieve the full bloom of their possibilities and may not even see the light of day.

Your role as a manager is first to motivate yourself and second to help your co-workers achieve more and better motivation. Once motivated, you and your co-workers will require an environment conducive to maintaining and rejuvenating your motivation.

Supportive environments require the care of these three Cs:

Conversations. Motivation is created through talking about what is important, about goals, and about dreams. Feedback about performance first should cover what worked, then what didn't. Discuss what it will look like and feel like when you succeed.

Connections.
Motivation is fueled by a positive connection to our work: we enjoy what we do and are passionate about it; our clients are satisfied and tell us; with our co-workers we are achieving something greater than ourselves. When there are disconnects, repair them immediately.

Co-creation. Working together with others to create something larger than ourselves fills a need and fuels further motivation. Make sure that people have the opportunity to grow and their motivation will keep pace.

Remember that the search for motivation never ends: everyday you will need to water and weed if want it to grow and work for you.

"Motivation is often talked about but seldom discussed. What are going to do about it? What are the tools? I’ve read it three times so far! The answers are here."
Pete Accorti, President,Talan Products, Inc.
